This week started normal enough and ended with me jet-lagged in a hotel room in Seoul. Here’s how that happened.
- 🍿 Watched Risen (2021, directed by Eddie Arya). A sci-fi where a meteor strike wrecks the environment and an exobiologist tries to figure out what’s going on with the survivors. It’s slow. Really slow. The atmosphere is odd in a way that keeps you watching, but not much actually happens for most of the runtime. The ending caught me off guard, though, and that saved it from being forgettable. If you’re scraping the bottom of your sci-fi watchlist on a rainy evening, it’ll do. Just don’t expect much before the last twenty minutes.
- 🧑💻 Published a post about the ritual that fixed my vacations. It’s about the habit I picked up of writing everything down before leaving for a trip: packing lists, loose ends, things to cancel or pause. Makes a real difference for actually relaxing once you’re out the door.
- 🌎 Left for Korea on Saturday, and things went sideways right away. The suitcase I picked decided to self-destruct, zipper split wide open. Grabbed a backup one, too big and with a dodgy wheel, but whatever. Then, halfway to the train station, I looked down and realized my shoes were falling apart. Back home, changed them, lost ten minutes. I mean, I was going to Korea, so none of that really mattered. Also, my bid for premium economy got accepted, which made the 10-hour Warsaw-Seoul leg a lot more bearable.
- 🌎 Landed in Seoul and the city just got me. So clean, green everywhere, new buildings sitting right next to old palaces like it’s the most normal thing. Dropped my bags at the hotel and went straight out on foot. Had lunch at a couple of street food stalls, walked to the royal palace, wandered through the shopping districts. By evening I was done, roughly 31 hours awake with maybe 3 or 4 hours of broken sleep on the plane, so I called it a night at 8pm. Barely keeping my eyes open, but grinning like an idiot.
